Friday, February 13 2026, 3 - 4pm Geology Colloquium - GG Building 200A or via Zoom Colloquium Speaker: Dr. Larry Anovitz Title: Neutrons in the Geosciences: New Approaches to Old (and New) Problems Hosted by: Dr. Garing Bio Dr. Lawrence M. Anovitz is a Distinguished Research Scientist at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory, where he has worked since 1994. He received a BA in Anthropology and a BS in Geology from the University of Arizona, and MS and PhD degrees from the University of Michigan, specializing in Metamorphic Petrology. These days, he is a member of the Geochemistry and Interfacial Sciences group at ORNL, working on a wide range of topics including the effects of natural and anthropomorphic processes on rock porosity, chemomechanics and crystallization pressure, confined fluids, amorphous materials, and the effects of radiation on nanoparticle nucleation and fluid structures. Abstract Although the use of neutrons to address questions of geological interest began during the Manhattan project, their potential use to address a wide variety of geological questions, often in novel ways, is often poorly understood. This talk will address this issue, first by Providing a brief overview of neutron scattering, imaging, and diffraction, and showing where neutrons can make important contributions to a variety of fields in the Earth Sciences - and where other approaches, especially X-rays, are better. It will then further illustrate the point with three more in-depth examples involving understanding reaction phenomena, weathering, and confined fluids. This is a hybrid event; if you are unable to join us in person, please join via Zoom. Meeting ID: 997 2477 2096 Note: A password is required to join this meeting. Please call the Geology office (706-542-2652) and speak with a representative to obtain the code. Alternatively, a code request can be made to UGA Geology.
